Energy Modeling

Our energy modeling provides the required documentation for pursuing LEED credits and in obtaining energy incentives from state and utility energy programs. We respond to all inquiries by the USGBC during the credit review process.

We create a narrative describing the key features of the facility and modeling techniques needed to capture the design concepts. The report incorporates the LEED compliance tables for the baseline and design cases as well as summary reports from the simulation. We also create a sensitivity matrix showing the impact of each design option. This table not only shows the relative impacts of the design features, but also serves a quality assurance role as a check that each measure had on impact of a reasonable range.

More importantly we use the energy analysis to inform the design team of the energy impacts of design choices including thermal performance of structural elements, HVAC systems configurations, and control options. We also help set energy performance targets based on similar buildings and define performance paths to achieving these targets.

Commissioning (Cx)

In commissioning efforts we use our performance assessment and measurement and verification skills to prove system operation across the full range of loading conditions. We incorporate the LEED requirements in our commissioning process. Our technical background in performance assessment, project management and communications skills combine to provide a successful and satisfactory commissioning procedure.

Our two main goals in commissioning are: 1) to provide the customer with documented evidence that the building systems operate as intended and 2) that the operations staff have the information and training they need to maintain system performance. All of the commissioning tasks are designed to obtain these goals in an efficient manner.

For LEED certified projects XRG will develop, manage and document a Cx process to verify that the owner’s project requirements within the Cx scope are in line with the US Green Building Council’s LEED prerequisite commissioning requirements. Further, XRG will facilitate the process through planning, documenting, setting testing requirements, witnessing the testing performed by the contractors and assisting in reviewing and analyzing results. Typically, the Cx scope will include energy using systems as follow:

  • HVAC

  • Lighting

  • Building Controls

  • Renewables

Measurement and Verification (M&V)

XRG (and as the CDH entity) has provided M&V services over the past 28 years ranging from evaluation of energy savings through utility incentive programs to planning and implementation of M&V for the USBGBC’s LEED. In our M&V activities we work with operations staff to evaluate building system performance. In new construction projects XRG can carry through the original energy performance targets to actual operation with evaluations on how to maintain or improve performance levels. The M&V efforts can build on the initial energy analysis and subsequent commissioning to verify actual performance under owner control.

Geographic Scope of Services

XRG Analytics provides energy modeling and commissioning services world-wide. Projects have ranged from China, Japan, Italy, Qatar as well as across the United States.
